Most kanji have more than one reading. The on-yomi is the Sino-Japanese reading, borrowed long ago from the way Chinese words were pronounced. It often shows up when kanji combine with other kanji to form compound words. This is a key to building extensive vocabulary, because many everyday words are made this way. The kun-yomi is the native Japanese reading and often appears when a kanji stands alone or with hiragana.
