The kanji 荷 combines the grass radical 艹 (often related to plants or items to carry) with the phonetic part 何. It originally referred to plants carried or transported, and by extension came to mean loads or freight in general.

荷物にもつが 多おおくて大変たいへんでした。
It was tough because I had so much luggage.
