期 is a combination of the 月 radical and the phonetic element 其 (キ). The 月 (moon/month) radical suggests time or periods, and 其 gives the sound. Together, the character relates to a fixed time frame or duration — a period, a deadline, or a term. It also came to imply “expectation” as in awaiting a future point in time.
