Meaning
Machine, opportunity, mechanism. Originally referred to a loom. Now also used to describe chance, machinery, or mechanical systems.
- 機械 — machine
- 機会 — opportunity
- 飛行機 — airplane
- 機能 — function
- 危機 — crisis
The left side “きへん” (木) suggests wood, originally for a wooden loom. The right component (幾) adds the sound and also relates to intricate mechanisms. Together, it refers to a weaving machine — later expanding to general machines and symbolic “opportunities.”
新しい 機械を 導入しました。
We introduced a new machine.
彼には 成功の 機会がありました。
He had a chance for success.
The on-yomi キ is used in almost all common compounds. The kun-yomi はた (loom) is rarely used in modern Japanese but reveals the character’s origin.
